A mantel can be a tricky little bugger to decorate. If you go overboard with your accessories, it can look like a cluttered mess. If you go too simple, it can look like an almost- empty mantel. I’ve done both.
Over the years I’ve discovered that my own personal tastes when it comes to mantel styling tend to lean more towards simple. I work in a lab and I’m usually up to my elbows in bodily fluids so at the end of the day, I like to come home to clean and simple.
So this is where we’re at with our summer mantel:
The white pitchers are from Target for $13 each and we just cut some leafy branches right outside our door to fill them. The white mirror is actually a Craigslist find that I scored for $25 and painted white. Brian put together that wooden box in about 15 minutes using this tutorial over on Shanty 2 Chic for around $5 and I just threw on a quick coat of stain after it was finished. I grabbed those vases at Hobby Lobby years ago and I can’t remember exactly how much I paid, but I know it was under $20 for all of them. Then I just filled them with wildflowers that grow in the field in our sub.
A fresh summer mantel for under $100.
Anyone else have any summer mantel styling ideas? Do you love to use fresh freebies to decorate your home? Is it just me or are mantels much easier to style at Christmas?
